 Local transports

Moving around is quite easy because UB itself is not that big. If you like to walk, you can get everywhere but try not to walk at night in dark places.

Taxi is fairly cheap in UB. 250 T per kilometer. (0.6 mile).  It is important to negotiate the price before moving because if you don’t, they might ask 300 T per kilometer after reaching the destination. Any cab can stop to pick you up. Private or taxies. When there is no taximeter, ask the driver to start the mile counter. That how they measure.
………….. Yvah uu?           Would you go to ……….?
………… hureh uu?             Means will it reach to ……………
Kilometer ni hed ve?            How much is per kilometer?
Huleej bai !     Wait.

Bus : T and you can travel as long as you want.

Minivan: for short distance, you can pay 100 T and for long distance, 200 T or even 300 T.  Minivans to the market usually charge 300 T.

Trolley. The cheapest transport in UB. 100 T. but for limited directions.

Train it’s prices may increase sometime soon. It is half owned by Russian Government and they brought a proposal to increase the price but for now its quite cheap.

There are sitting, hard sleeping and soft sleeping categories. In Sitting one , you can sleep too if its not to loaded. However, be extra careful at night or you might wake up with no shoes if you don’t put them in safe place. Hide them!  Hard sleeper is comfortable but you have to buy sheets.  As for Soft sleeper, it is soft but the trains are pretty old and it’s quite noisy on the ride.
On any of these you can buy tea or instant coffee mix. It’s also possible to eat in the train restaurant or at the longer stop where there is a bigger town, like Darkhan, Zyynkharaa in the north and Choir, Sainshand.

Tourist accommodation in the countryside is based around the ger camp concept, the traditional home of the Mongolian her.ders. Anything from 6 to 60 gers in one location with separate toilet and washing facilities and a restaurant. Prices range between $30 and $40 per night including meals.
There are few hotels in the countryside and most are designed for domestic rather than international tourists. Prices average at $15 per night.
Tourists can generally camp where they wish in the countryside, although it is advisable to camp away from settlements. There are also laws governing protected areas that prohibit camping in the most sensitive areas.

Mongolian banknotes

The name is TOGROG. There are 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 10.000, 20.000.  Be extra careful of the 100 and 5000 banknotes as they look the same. Do not mix them up!!! It’s worth to have some smaller banknotes with you because not many places can change bigger ones.  The rate is about 1164T for one dollar by May 6, 2007.

You can change money at the bank or the exchange place. Rates varies depending on the the bank but it is a little more reliable than at the exchange place where the rate is higher.  There are some exchange place near to UB guest house.  And they are small kind of shops in Juulchinii Street.

Where is the money exchange place?                        Mongo solidog gazar haana ve?
Or you can simply say -change haana ve? People will understand what are you talking about because that’s how the people who change money say it. (Change)

There are ATMs in some banks or bigger office or store buildings. They are usually closed in the evening. It’s impossible to change money in the countryside, it is therefore necessary to bring enough money for the trip.

Finding an address in Mongolia is a bit complicated because we almost never use the name of the streets. So you have to find a bigger building in an area so that you can find a places close by. For example, if you want to go to UB guest house, you have to ask for the Mongol Bank Building. The guest house is on the opposite of the Mongol Bank.

You have to say something like this : ….. …… haana ve?
Will be probably very useful phrase means where? And show the name of a place.
Some places has English signs.

Eating out.

Ulaanbaatar has an excellent range of Western, Asian and Mongolian options. No other city this side of Beijing has close to a comparable selection. Even better, meals here are quite reasonable. You can get perfectly reasonable pizza for $3, even a night out at a fancy French food shouldn't pass $20. Consider splurging on a couple good meals here.

Mongolian cuisine is not very Asian. It’s more Russian. It is usually very fatty and greasy.  It is therefore necessary to ask for “No fat” in the beginning. /Oohgyi aviya/ means No fat.

Prices can be different depending on the name. If the place is called “Restaurant”, it is more expensive.  The Cafe can be bit expensive too. But they are usually more clean. Guanz Ãóàíç, Tsainii gazar Öàéíû Ãàçàð are cheaper you should be able to eat in those places for around 2US$ one time. Some of them has very good food.
Most of these places have no bathroom so it would be useful to have tissue with you to clean up your hand. Few of them have English menu.
Mostly you pay in advance when you give the order.
